• When you pick out the colors for this design choose a light base coat, a contrasting shade for the main color, and a metallic polish for the finishing highlights.
• Apply as many layers of the first color as you see fit. “Social Ladder” is a sheer pearl shimmer so I did three thin coats. Let your base coat dry.
• For this design I use a regular kitchen sponge. The texture of the sponge is really porous. The size of the holes is important, it’s relative to the density of the layer of polish. For the second layer of polish, pick an area with smaller holes, and for the last layer, larger holes. It all sounds very technical, but it will make sense when you’re actually working with sponge.
• When you’re sponging on the polish, this technique is more like stamping than the usual fading. For your main color, apply a liberal amount of polish to an area roughly the size of your thumbnail. Using a minimal amount of pressure, roll your nail over the polished piece of sponge. Let this layer dry for a couple minutes. The results of this step are pictured above.
• Do the same with your third color, keeping in mind the size of the holes in the area you will be sponging with. Using less pressure than before, roll your nail over the sponge.
• Clean up the excess polish and you’re done. You can add a top coat if you’d like. I like the rough texture of the finished look, so I skipped it.
