Polish, paint, pixels & ink

I find way too much excitement in organizing. Used prescription bottles are perfect size for many nail art accessories and a pill box can hold hundreds of nails. Here’s another post on organizing bottles of nail polish.

Shinin & Grindin

Spoiled by Wet n Wild • Jewelry Heist

I wanted to do a post on a couple of the “Spoiled” glitter polishes, but I’ve been working a lot recently, so I’ll have to do them separately.

I discovered the solution to a problem that comes up when photographing glitter polish. Natural light makes all the difference! I took this pic outside on a sunny day and it looks exactly as it does in person. It’s kind of a revelation.

I just uploaded all of my nail art pictures to a new public Photobucket album with dozens of designs, including some shots I never posted here on “Polish, Paint, Pixels & Ink.”

Dollar Tree sells packs of nail files for a buck, and they are more than worth it. A single package includes 36 files with assorted shapes and textures. Most importantly, they are not flimsy; they hold up well to hardcore filing. It took only a few seconds to file my hard, square acrylic nails down to an oval shape. And they even fit in the plastic container that my Migi Pen set came in… perfect.

Dollar Tree Score

Sally Hansen • Bronze Ablaze
Sally Hansen • Jumpin’ Jade

I found these for a dollar each at Dollar Tree. They have about ten different shades from Sally Hansen’s “Insta-dri” and “Diamond Strength” collections.

Art Deco & Diamonds

Sinful Colors • Over Easy
Wet n Wild • Black Creme

This is one of those manicures that I can’t stop starting at. “Over Easy” is a mauve cream polish, and there’s something about it that I really love. I’m usually attracted to the complete opposite of neutral colors- neon, glitter, etc. But I grabbed “Over Easy” as soon as I saw it.

Stars in Outer Space

Sinful Colors • UFO
Wet n Wild • Sunny Side Up

“UFO” caught my eye right away. It’s an orange gel polish full of different types of glitter, mainly holographic glitter. Unfortunately, the pretty rainbow effect doesn’t show in pictures. I started with two coats of “Sunny Side Up,” a light orange cream polish. Sinful Colors makes a few other awesome, dimensional glitter polishes. “Nail Junkie” is one of my favorite polishes in my collection.

Today I discovered “Spoiled” by Wet n Wild, a new collection of $2 nail polishes, exclusively sold at CVS drug stores. It’s not exactly breaking news, as Walgreens stores are more commonplace in New Orleans and I rarely shop at CVS.

This collection is very on-trend, especially the neon cream shades and chunky multi-colored glitter polishes. Spoiled also features Wet n Wild’s “Manicurve” brush, which is wider and more flat than classic nail polish brushes. I think this style brush makes regular application much smoother. But if you occasionally use standard brushes to do larger nail art details, like I do, it’s tricky to do with the “Manicurve” brush. Overall, I like using them.

Basically, Spoiled seems to be Wet n Wild’s answer to Sinful Colors. They are very similar, and even share some identical colors, as well as the the $1.99 price. Wet n Wild rarely disappoints me, so I give this collection my approval. I haven’t had the chance to try many of the colors, but I’ll post a “Spoiled” manicure tomorrow with the colors I have.

Glitter & Matte Mix

New York Color • Big Money
New York Color • Matte Me Crazy
Wet n Wild • Through the Grapevine
Wet n Wild • Party of Five Glitters

I scored a $2 matte top coat from Walmart. I had never tried New York Color before, so I also got a frosty mint color called “Big Money” for $1. This is my first experience with a matte top coat. I have nothing to compare NYC’s version to, but it seemed to work fine and dry fairly quick. The effect is really pretty, although it didn’t quite translate in the photo. It looks like frosted glass. Another plus is the slightly wider, flat brush. It’s perfect for quickly applying a layer of top coat to wet nails.

My nails still have pretty bad ridges. I had to cut them all the way down. The only fix seems to be using glitter polish; it hides most of the bad ridges. Of course, taking a break from using polish all together would be the best thing to do, but I don’t see how that’s even possible.
